Prague, Jan 26 (CTK) - Home Credit, one of the leaders on the hire purchase market in the Czech Republic, financed clients' purchases worth CZK 7.1 billion in 2006, 6 percent more than in 2005, the company informed CTK today in a press release. In the last quarter alone, the company lent clients CZK 2.2 billion, 13 percent more year-on-year, Home Credit director Milos Stibor said. Stibor added that the long term trend has been confirmed, with clients preferring to buy on hire purchase white goods like fridges, washing machines, cookers, and dish washers in the summer months, and brown goods like computers, TVs, and DVD recorders before Christmas. Among the goods acquired on hire purchase last year, electrical appliances prevailed (number of contracts signed up 12 percent year-on-year), followed by consumer electronics (9 percent)....

Nielsen ratings include TiVo

Q: With the recent emergence of DVRs and TiVo, I'm curious as to how Nielsen ratings are calculated. If I were to watch one show on one network, and another show on a different network is taping at the same time, does the taped show get counted as being viewed? It doesn't seem fair, especially for new shows, if a viewer has DVR'd it, and intends to watch it, but the show does not get counted. A: Nielsen does measure shows on digital recorders. But a spokesman said, ''The show goes into the ratings when it is played back, not when it is recorded.'' Q: We have been looking for a DVD movie called ''The Last of the Dogmen'' starring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey. Could you help? A: The 1995 movie was released on DVD in 2000. New copies are still for sale, including at amazon.com....

New Recorders Offer High-Quality Video
Posted Monday, November 27, 2006 12:59:23 PM by Blog57 Team
Are the format wars finally over? Thankfully, almost. Compared with the hard-drive-equipped DVD recorders we reviewed a year ago, twice as many now support both the +R and -R formats. The only exception here is the Toshiba RD-XS55, the priciest model on the chart at $700. All of the recorders delivered high-quality video. Every model regardless of its cost (the units we reviewed range from $340 to $700) earned a Very Good score for recording quality in our tests. We recorded a variety of content in four quality modes, and found the results almost indistinguishable among the devices. And though we noticed some subtle differences in the artifacts that marred video recorded at the lower-quality modes, they weren't enough to affect our scores. As for the recorders' features, however, they couldn't vary more--while some of the models offer a range of useful extras, others lag behind....

The duel of the dual-layer DVD formats
Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 11:03:55 AM by Blog57 Team
One side of the ongoing recordable DVD format battle is expected to be first with products that nearly double the amount of data held on one disc. But that victory may not put an end to the feud. The DVD+RW camp, which includes Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Philips, plans to put so-called "double-layer" DVD recording devices on the market by next spring. Discs on these systems are expected to hold 8.5GB, or four hours of DVD-quality video (16 hours of VHS-quality video). That's about the same amount as the DVDs studios use to issue movies. But the so-called "dash" camp promoting the DVD-R and DVD-RW formats also is working on dual-layer recording, which involves writing data on two separate surfaces, layered like coats of paint, on a DVD. And unlike in the videotape-standard battle between VHS and Betamax, "plus" and "dash" may be able to coexist for some time to come, observers say....

Review: Hard-drive DVD recorders
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 1:04:20 PM by Blog57 Team
DVD recorders with hard drives make a lot of sense. All your time-shift recordings go to the hard drive and anything you want to keep can be dubbed across to DVD. After you've edited out the ads, of course. Dubbing can be done at great speed. The Pioneer we review dubs a two-hour movie from hard disc to DVD in just 100 seconds. DVD recorders also have "chase play", which, with the touch of a button, allows you to pause broadcast television to answer the phone and then resume where you left off, catching up to the broadcast by zapping the advertisements. All your recordings are instantly accessible, and you will find most of the features you've become comfortable with in your VCR, such as G-Code and one-touch recording. Individual recordings are easy to find, which is just as well - the Pioneer looked at here records up to 711 hours of video....
