Building your own DVD library

DVD movies are available everywhere. You can buy DVD movies, rent them, download them and even copy them. There are DVD movie clubs that allow you to buy cheap DVD's at wholesale prices and some even offer a free DVD after a certain number of DVD purchases. DVD moviesThey also offer a review of each DVD so you can check it out before you purchase the movie.

Cheap DVD's are not always such a bargain. Many are ripped off copies that are really bad quality. It is often possible to tell if a DVD is a copy by checking out the label on the cover.

Original DVD movie covers host the recording studio's label. Downloading a DVD from an internet site is also a great option. There is usually a price to pay, but it's much cheaper than buying a regular DVD.

You can then either view the DVD movie on your PC or burn it to disc.

Groups duke it out over HD DVD formats

For millions of consumers who bought high-definition television sets over the holidays, there has been one major disappointment: DVD movies often look worse than they did on their old TVs. I call it the "plastic surgery" effect. It's an artifact of converting a movie from a medium designed for the best picture possible on standard TV screens, with 480 horizontal lines of resolution, to HDTV sets, with 720 or 1024 lines. Whatever you call it, the process may actually eliminate some detail, particularly from human faces, making them look like they've had one tuck too many. ....

Wal-Mart joins the crowd in online movies

On Tuesday, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. begins selling films online, as the leading seller of DVDs stakes a claim in the emerging market of movie downloading. The online store, found at www.walmart.com/videodownloads, is the first to offer digital movie purchases from all seven major Hollywood studios. The online DVD market is already crowded with competitors, including Apple, online retailer Amazon.com's Unbox, premium cable operator Starz Entertainment Media Group's Vongo and lesser-known download-to-own services such as Movielink and CinemaNow Inc. These services are still struggling to find a mainstream audience. Wal-Mart's announcement was not surprising, given the retailer's influential role in DVD sales, the single largest source of studio revenue....

Hybrid products unlikely to end DVD format war

LOS ANGELES/LAS VEGAS: The war between duelling next-generation DVD formats is far from over despite a peace offering in the form of new products that cater to both, industry officials said. Hollywood and electronics manufacturers had hoped new high-definition DVDs, with better picture quality and more capacity would rejuvenate the slowing $24 billion home DVD market. But a war between Sony's Blu-ray standard and Toshiba's HD DVD has curbed adoption in a way reminiscent of the Betamax-VHS videotape format battle. This week at the Consumer Electronics Show, South Korea's LG Electronics unveiled a player supporting both formats, and Time Warner announced plans to unveil a disc that holds films in both formats. While the backers of the hybrid products say they offer a solution to the format war, many industry experts said they actually extend the battle and consumer confusion....

Yesterday's movies, tomorrow's profits

Gary Howsam recalls being swamped with angry e-mails when his film and television production company began making a movie about the man who shot John Lennon. Chapter 27, which stars Jared Leto and Lindsay Lohan, explores the mental collapse of Mark Chapman as his demons persuaded him to murder the rock icon in 1980. "It's a pretty controversial film," said Mr. Howsam, chief executive officer of Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. "To make a film about this guy who was believed to have done this for fame seems to be empowering his objective." Mr. Howsam hopes to sign a deal with a U.S. distributor when the movie premieres at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, which starts next week. Although he expects Chapter 27 to do well at the box office, he admits the film production and distribution business can be unpredictable....

THE SKINNY ON MOVIES LAWRENCE TOPPMAN: R.I.P., VCR, though DVD can't replace you
Posted Friday, January 05, 2007 2:55:00 PM by Blog57 Team
I don't like to start the New Year with an obituary, especially when the victim is such an old friend, but I can't resist quoting one sent to me by reader John Rotan. He found it in Daily Variety, which recently announced the death of Vertical Helical Scan at the age of 30. I'm not sure I ever knew the full name of VHS, born to the JVC Corporation and vanquisher of Betamax in the 1980s as the leading format for home video. I was just told one can now buy a videocassette recorder for $30 online, and I may do that: The two we have (along with DVD players upstairs and down) do yeoman service, and I'd hate to lose the format. If you're over 35, you'll recall the thrill of learning for the first time that beloved movies could be preserved for home use, just as music and books had been recorded for decades and centuries....

PlayStation 3 bonus: It runs Blu-ray movies
Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 12:56:36 PM by Blog57 Team
For example, the original Xbox played DVD movies, but you had to buy a separate remote control for them to work, and the PlayStation 2 developed a reputation for mediocre video quality when playing DVDs. But Sony's new PlayStation 3 bucks the trend when it comes to high-definition Blu-ray movies, and even videophiles probably won't be disappointed with the image quality. The first bit of good news, strangely enough, is the price. While the $500 and $600 models seem outrageous if you plan to just play PS3 games, those price tags are much more reasonable if you want to watch movies as well. Right now, stand-alone Blu-ray players cost $900 and up. HD-DVD movie players — which also play high-def movies but are incompatible with Blu-ray discs — are a little cheaper, but you don't get the ability to play PS3 games, if that's something you're interested in....

Free HD DVD Movies with Player Purchase

After dropping $500 or more on electronics, the last thing you want to buy is add-ons. But a new DVD player isn't much fun to look at -- even if it is one of those fancy high-def models. You need some movies! HD DVDs aren't exactly cheap, especially if you're looking to replace some of your existing collection. However, Ars Technica says that Toshiba is going to cushion some of the cost by offering three HD DVDs with the purchase of one of their HD DVD players. Choose one movie from each studio: Universal: Apollo 13, The Chronicles of Riddick, The Rundown, Seabiscuit, U-571 Warner: Blazing Saddles, Casablanca, Constantine, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Perfect Storm Paramount: Four Brothers, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, U2: Rattle and Hum, We Were Soldiers I'm all for freebies, but expect those titles to take eight to 10 weeks to get to you....

Police investigate counterfeit DVD sales

Des Moines police are investigating a fraud case involving a vendor who was selling what appeared to be counterfeit DVD movies at a flea market today. Two Missouri men are thought to be involved in the pirated movie sales. Both left the monthly flea market at the Iowa State Fairgrounds this afternoon before police arrived. The men were selling new releases in look-alike packages for as low as $8, said another DVD vendor, Joe Sciarrotta, who alerted authorities to the counterfeiters. Titles offered included the Disney movie Cars and The Da Vinci Code, which isnt scheduled for DVD release until Tuesday. One man who bought a counterfeit copy of the movie Cars compared the packaging and DVD to a legitimate copy sold by Sciarrotta and found them markedly different....

New DVD film set to revisit 'Babylon 5'

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Fans of "Babylon 5" received an early Christmas present Monday when production began on a new DVD film focused on the sci-fi U.S. TV series. Production of the straight-to-DVD film, entitled "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales," officially began with several key cast members of the series reprising the roles they once held, and series creator J. Michael Straczynski writing and helming the production, said Zap2it.com. "Babylon 5" first premiered in 1993 and garnered two Emmy awards and numerous other accreditations before ending its TV run in 1998. The series, which focused on life aboard an orbiting space station, has already spawned a series of movies and a limited series, but Warner Home Video exec Jeff Brown said the series' audience is still loyal to the show....

REDMOND, Washington -- Microsoft Corp. has teamed up with a handful of Hollywood studios to sell TV shows and movies that can be downloaded through the software maker's Xbox Live online video-game service and beamed straight onto television sets.
